Roos Rebergen & Lars Kroon
The Netherlands has a reputation to uphold when it comes to quality Christmas songs. And now we can add at least one future classic to the Dutch canon of Christmas songs, placing it right at the top while we're at it, because oh la la, what a delightful Christmas cracker this is! It's called 'In Hemelsnaam' (for Christ's sake) and it's a Dutch duet by Roos Rebergen and Lars Kroon.
Starting with the latter, he played in Go Back to the Zoo and St. Tropez, among others, then founded Lars and the Magic Mountain, and then returned to Toverberg. And now, back to basics, he is once again a skilled songwriter under his own name, with rock solid singer-songwriter material that he spices up with bits of folk, Americana and country until it's perfectly seasoned.
And then there's Roos Rebergen. She was only 15 when she founded her band Roosbeef in 2003, creating a musical universe entirely her own. Lyrically, she has also been at the top of the list of the best lyricists in the Netherlands for years, especially when it comes to authenticity. Rebergen's lyrics always contain surprising twists, sharp and alienating observations, and often display a pleasant kind of naivety that, on closer inspection, always turns out to contain deeper layers. And that's not even mentioning her unique voice and diction.
In addition to her band and various solo work, she made two special albums with Torre Florim of De Staat and more recently she reworked her own songs (and wrote some new) with SunSunSun Orchestra, a five-piece string ensemble, while her band was temporary put on hold due to very sad circumstances.
And now a Christmas song.
Yes, and this great track starts with the recognizable piano sounds of ‘Kling, Glöckchen’, the German Christmas carol from the 19th century, after which Roos takes the lead and the guitar kicks in. It starts off quietly, with softly tinkling sleigh bells and then transitions into a, for both artists, atypical thunderous kinda rock sound that hardly slows down.
The lyrics are also quirky and offer a unique take on Christmas, with a small reference to another Dutch icon, Ramses Shaffy in it. We, at our CAGG headquarters, were blown away.
If you want to see them perform live together, you can visit the well-known 'Clean Pete Kerst Show', where they are both guests this year.
