When Sunturns were a pony
Guestblog! Mr Dan Fejes on the equistrian past of Sunturns:
Anyone who likes hunting down new Christmas music - original songs from original artists - has to resign themselves to the ephemeral nature of much of it. Groups or individual artists often pop up and disappear with almost no notice, leaving no electronic trails behind them. Others show up once or twice and never follow it up, all of which can be frustrating when you really love a tune and would like to know more about the creator.
For instance, in 2013 the long since departed blog Elves' Bells! wrote this:
I can't find any info about Teemu the Finn. I assume he is from Finland. Whoever he is - He has created at least 3 pretty catchy Christmas songs. They all start kind of slowly, but develop nicely. This last one contains the wonderful line, "This Christmas goes up to eleven."
I happened to download 2 of the 3 songs - "Everybody Make Some Noise (For Christmas)" and "You Put Christmas Into My Heart." The third one? It is now a mystery, not even its title remains on the Internet. The first one, though, now enjoys a second life right here on CAGG.
In 2009 a group/individual called My Little Pony (epic search engine optimization fail) released a song called Electric Christmas. The music blog Another Form of Relief had this to say:
I don't really know anything about My Little Pony beyond the fact they are an indiepop band from Norway that Last.fm keeps insisting I should like. Based on this little ball of awesome, I think they might be right.
MLP morphed into Sunturns, and they eventually released a new version: As a proper music snob, I prefer the unreleased demo. Guuzbourg is making this one available as well, so you can take the Pepsi challenge and decide for yourself. There is a live Xmas-album from Sunturns out now, by the way (here).
Many, many thanks to the proprietor for making these lost gems available, and for being an invaluable resource over the years for great new holiday music.
Merry Christmas!
Dan
