All I Want for Last Christmas is to give you my Band Aid

2024, that means that three of the biggest selling Christmas pop songs have a jubilee to celebrate. 40 years of Last Christmas and Do They Know It's Christmas Time, 30 years of Mariah's All I Want for Christmas. Songs that are overplayed, notorious and covered many, many times. The BBC made a documentary on Last Christmas, a special release of the Wham! song will be released, same goes for the Band Aid-song with today's stars. AND there is a documentary too (thanks Chantal, see comments). Not sure yet how (and if) All I Want for Christmas is celebrated, but it will, no doubt. EDIT: well, there is this.

We did post one or two Band Aid-cover versions, but never a definitive version. If there is one, it might be this:
To be honest, Do They Know It's Christmas Time is a highy effective song (as in: it brought in a lot of money for a good cause) but also a very annoying track, with some appalling lyrics. If we have to choose, we choose this song, with the same title, but not a cover and lyrics that are way, way better:

And I'm sure this won't be the only thing marking this erm... joyous event. For one thing, I think Mariah, with her quite astonishing and unashamed narcissism, will have initiated quite a few things herself...

And there's this. From this remarkably uncritical article, it sounds like all the ways they're marking it are quite positive. 'The song that changed the world' is nauseating to me, but then again - maybe I'm too cynical and maybe this song did do good (well, it did, money-wise, but I'm wondering about the changing the world part).

Thanks Chantal! I doubt that doc on Band Aid will be as good as the one on We Are The World (that was sooo funny), but one can only hope.

Read it and weep HERE . Sure, one of the perks of making a Best Of-list is that someone else can disagree with it. But this Pitchfork-list is so, as CU tweeted, uninspired it's getting me nauseous. There are non-Christmassongs in the list. Songs that are overplayed. Two versions of the same song. And Low's Little Drummer Boy instead of Just Like Christmas? Really? REALLY? Let's get a few things straight. When making a Best Christmas Songs-list, you need to set ground rules. Do hymns (O Come, O Come Emmanuel), traditional Christmassongs (O Tannenbaum) and pop songs compete with each other? Do you choose original versions or best versions? And, maybe the most important thing, what does your (play)list achieve; to heighten spirits, to have plain fun? Pitchfork's list just f's around, there's no real idea behind it. Pondertone, in spite of it all

CAGG Team loves to feature Dutch artists making Christmas music - Clean Pete , The Heck , Rick Buur , Non-Traditionals , Fay Lovsky ...and that's just a handful of fellow Dutchies that shone on this blog. We posted a lot of Pondertone (Americana from the city of Utrecht) on CAGG. The songs have depth and a clear message. For these dark days, we were kinda hopin' that Patrick & the guys would release a new addition to their impressive Xmas discography. But no. Instead there is a compilation of all seasonal songs.
