WINNERS OF A TRIP TO THE MOON

Remember our giveaway contest? Those who wanted on of three FREE vinyl slabs of that fantastic Christmas song by Double Cream, had to write a short blog on their all-time favourite big band and/or blue eyed soul Christmas track.

And the winners are: ADAM KENNEDY representing BC, Canada
My Favourite Big Band Christmas song is 'Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer Mambo' by Billy May and his Orchestra. From the opening shout of the reindeer names, to the Perez Prado-style grunts, this is a brassy, sassy, spectacle for the ears. It's Latin jazz with a bit of comedy sprinkled in. I first heard it on the Christmas Cocktails set and have loved it and introduced it to several people since then. This song doesn't request permission to enter a room; it kicks the door down, passes out tequila shots, then lights the dog on fire. Highly reccommended!

Next up: JAKE HANSEN, representing Indiana, USA
What is my favorite Blue-Eyed Soul Christmas song? Hand down that title belongs to Kelly Finnigan's 'Waiting On The Big Man'. The song starts with a spoken Sugar Plum Fairy x2 and then turns into this super smooth baby making groove...Scratch that, it turns into a smooth Baby Jesus making groove. Turn on the fire, sit next to your significant other while enjoying your favorite cocktail and the song will hit at another level.

And finally: JIM GOODWIN, representing Virginia, USA
A Danish soul band, named after an American city, playing tracks that could have been recorded 50 years ago, D/Troit hits on something incredible with their classic-worthy, 'Motown X-mas Song.' The music has an incredible groove, but I particularly love the visuals they create. Motown Christmas is a big party (which, it is!), and everyone is there: The Supremes, Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, the Temptations, the list goes on and on. It’s a scene out of that time-honored practice of imagining you assembling the greatest band ever… one where everyone you ever loved was right there, hanging out in the same room, wearing fuzzy sweaters and having a great time. It just puts a big fucking smile on your face. This song is pure joy.
